How to Build a Professional Dark by Rior Set from Scratch

Start with Removal

When a client arrives with an existing coating, nail prep begins before you even touch the cuticle or the natural plate.

For a first kit there is no point buying several carbide bits with very similar functions. At DARK, bit No. 205 for right-handers or No. 209 for left-handers in the Christmas-tree shape covers the basics: the tapered tip makes it easy to work the lateral zones and file the natural nail from the underside. One bit can serve several stages at once.

From there you can expand with additional nail drill bits based on your own speed, technique and the materials you most often remove.

E-File Bits for Nail Preparation

Which bits and files for nail tech preparation you need depends on how you work with the cuticle, the grooves and the sidewalls. Some technicians need just two shapes, others require a wider set, so it is best to start from the movements you actually perform during a manicure. For a combined or classic technique you can add the DARK urea-based remover to the kit. How to Prepare Nails for Coating

One of the most important stages happens before the dehydrator, primer or base even come into play.

Mechanical nail preparation is needed to remove the natural shine and leave a uniform micro-texture on the surface. For a starter kit, add a DARK foam-backed file in 180/240 grit in a crescent or oval shape.

The 240-grit side handles delicate shine removal from the natural plate, while the 180-grit side comes in handy for work on the free edge. Correct use of files is above all about pressure control. It is enough to pass evenly across the plate without lingering too long on any one area. Proper filing before base looks the same: minimum pressure and even processing without thinning the plate.

Preparing brittle nails calls for extra care. On a thin plate, use the 240-grit side and work especially gently. For a first kit there is no need to stock five abrasive grades. A 180/240-grit file covers the core tasks.

Dust Cleared: On to Chemical Preparation

After filing, dust remains on the surface. Before the next steps it must be removed completely. In the DARK system, Gel Cleanser handles this.

Next comes preparation before gel polish. Nail plate dehydration removes excess surface moisture before material application, so start with DARK Dehydrator. After that, DARK Ultrabond is used when needed. It adds adhesion between the natural nail and the subsequent coating, but it is not a mandatory step for every client. Its use depends on the condition of the nail plate.

Which Base to Buy First

With DARK BY RIOR bases, it is better to start from function rather than palette.

For a first purchase, ICONIC BASE DARK is a solid choice. It can be applied in a thin layer under hard materials or used for light levelling of the natural plate. If a significant part of your work involves short natural nails, add a couple of camouflage bases to the kit. For example, PRO BASE No. 46 and No. 47: semi-sheer shades with a light veil that preserve the natural look of the plate. Another important point: volume. Dark bases tops buy in the 5 ml test format first. This lets you try several shades in real work and see which ones genuinely suit you before moving to larger jars.

When You Need Reinforcement

For short coatings a base can cover a large share of procedures. But if you work with length, reinforcement or extensions, the kit needs a hard material.

Colours are the hardest category to restrain yourself in, but actual demand is a good guide. To start, a few reds are enough: a vivid one, a classic one and a dark burgundy, plus black and white.

Top Coats: Two Are Enough for Core Work

• DARK TOP NO UV: for black, red, dark colours and materials with glitter.

The reason is in the filters: on dark shades a UV filter can alter the visual perception of the colour in sunlight, so for such coatings DARK recommends a top without UV filters.

DARK tops have no sticky layer, so after curing this step requires no additional cleansing.

What to Add for the End of the Procedure

The working kit should include at least one product for hand and cuticle care, for example PHOTOSHOP DARK oil. It is applied after the coating has cooled, roughly five minutes after curing the top.
